Locomotives are compatible, depending on power supply (DC or AC) DC locomotives can be used only on the DC track and AC locomotives only on the AC powered track." The Electro-Motive Division proposed the EMD SD35 (SD-Special Duty) as the replace- ment for the already aged E6, E7, E8, E9 and the SD24S locomotives. These locomo- tives were used in both passenger and freight services. The production begun in June 1964, the first customers were Southern Railway and Norfolk & Western Railway for the passenger and Atlantic Coast Line and Louisville & Nashville Railroad for the freight services. The passenger units SDP35 had an extended hood to house the steam generator, device that was not needed on the freight units. The locomotive shared the same angled cab roof and carbody style introduced with the four-axle EMD GP35. In a relative short production time (which ended in January 1966) some 360 of these with the 2.500 h.p. diesels equipped locomotives were built. They weighed about 160 tons.
