Description

Sweet cassava, a starchy tuberous root, is also known as manioc, yuca, balinghoy, mogo, mandioca, kamoteng kahoy and tapioca root. Despite being known as yuca, it is not the same plant as yucca, which is a fruit-bearing shrub in the Asparagaceae family. Sweet cassava is native to South America and Africa, but grows well in tropical and subtropical regions across the globe. Cassava is the third largest staple crop in the world sustaining over half a billion people living in developing regions.

The peelings and stems of cassava are believed to contain high amounts of phytoestrogens. A specific tribe of people in Africa, known as the Yorubi, have a twinning rate of 1 out of every 11 pregnancies. This number is especially high when compared to the average twinning rate of 1 in every 33 births in the United States and is believed to be due to the high consumption of cassava.
