The Schlage Electronics AD-400 series networked wireless electronic mortise lockset with satin chrome finish and Sparta-style lever handle is battery powered, provides a secure door latching system for storeroom and classroom use, includes a multi-technology reader to verify access credentials, and contains a Schlage cylinder keyway. The lockset assembly communicates wirelessly with the system in real time to implement modifications to credentials, trigger a central lockdown, or provide access to up-to-the minute audit data. The two included keys and the Schlage 6-pin full cylinder keyway in the base of the lever handle enable mechanical override of the electronic system. The multi-technology reader scans either proximity (125 kHz) or smart (13.56 MHz) cards or fobs (sold separately) when placed near the reader to confirm security credentials and allow access. As security needs change, the reader module can be replaced with a different AD-series reader that better suits access control needs. The mortise lockset inserts into a large cutout in the edge of the door, enabling a more secure latch than a cylindrical lock.

The Sparta-style lever handle is long, smooth, and curved, is made of steel, and can be installed as right or left handed. Three colored LED lights and an audio signal can be programmed to indicate when credentials are validated or denied or when batteries are running low. The inside handle does not lock, allowing users to exit any time. The assembly is compatible with most access control systems for integration into an existing security network. The Schlage PIM400-TD2 panel interface board (sold separately) is required in order to connect up to two AD-400 lockset assemblies to the access control panel or reader interface board.

Some systems can designate user access for specific hours or days and may include a keyway for mechanical override. Common electronic locking mechanisms include electromagnetic locks and electric strikes. A cylindrical lock requires two bored perpendicular holes in the door for installation: one in the door face and a crossbore hole in the door edge.
