As alder cones are naturally produced and not man made, their size ranges from 0.5" to 1" (1.25cm to 2.5cm). You will get 50 pieces in one pack enough for even the big shrimp aquariums.
Even small SunGrow Alder Cones release plenty of tannins, enough to darken the water showing that the cones are doing their job naturally. Compared to chemical variations that have similar results, alder cones are pesticide-free, have no additives and add a raw beauty of your fish tank. Other natural solutions include cholla wood and catappa leaves. Depending on your pH requirements, you can use any one or combination of these 3 elements.
Some of the most ideal environments for impressive SunGrow Alder Cones is in shrimp tanks, betta fish bowls and black water habitats. Adult shrimps love to graze on the biofilm created by the miniature pine cones while young and molting shrimps use them as secure hiding places.
Note: Always rinse before use, even after boiling or soaking. A "post-boil soak" in fresh water with a bag of activated carbon is a recommended step too. Although we obtain our products from sources known to be free of pollution, impurities, and pesticides, you can never be too careful, and the extra step is worthwhile, in our opinion. The quantity to be used vary tank to tank. Start with 1 cone per gallon and observe the pH effect to determine what quantity is perfect for your tank.
