Description
The Fairey Barracuda torpedo bomber was manufactured by Fairey Aviation during World War II and was later on deployed in the North Atlantic. The aircraft played a very important role in attacking enemy carriers such as the German battleship Tirpitz. As the first torpedo bomber with an all-metal fuselage, the Barracuda was considered heavy and unsafe to fly by its pilots. However, it wasn’t the all-metal construction or the insufficient power from the engine that made the aircraft dangerous to fly. Its pilots lacked the proper training to take full advantage of the torpedo bomber’s power. After the war, hundreds of these planes were cast off in aircraft boneyards.
