About the Mil Mi-24: NATO codename "Hind", the Mi-24 was developed by Mil Helicopters and first introduced in 1972. The image of Soviet Mi-24 helicopters hovering over Mujahedeen positions during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan (1979-1989) etched an enduring impression on many who are otherwise unaware of the massive and powerful Soviet gunship helicopter. An estimated 2,000 Mi-24s were produced and used successfully by air forces of countries around the world.
