History of the wood: In 1854, a dam was built across the Rappahannock River in Fredericksburg, Virginia, to channel water into the canal. The dam, its reservoir and canal were an impediment to the Union Army quartered on the north side of the river and Confederate Army on the south. It was a prominent landmark at the main Confederate defensive line during the December 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg. The dam was removed in 2004, and the white oak turned a rich black from being underwater for over 150 years.
